Eatonville is a small town with a long memory. Incorporated on the fifteenth of August 1887, it stands as one of the first self-governing all-Black municipalities in the United States, and the institutions that carried it — the church, the school, the family — are still the ones that organize a great deal of life here. Zora Neale Hurston grew up in it and wrote about it for the rest of her career.
One practical consequence is that outings here are often not single-family affairs. They are a Sunday school class, a family gathering, a homeschool circle, several households going together. Most children’s attractions in Central Florida are priced and built around a family of four and get awkward and expensive past about eight people.
We are set up the other way round. Groups of 10 to 19 come in at $15 a head, and from 20 upward it is $12 a head with a reservation, with one free admission for every 20 paid. There is open pasture to spread out across, shaded picnic tables for a proper meal together, a Tractor-Drawn Wagon Ride that takes a crowd, and no schedule anybody has to keep to. General admission for a single family is $18 for anyone 2 and over, with under-2s free.
Coni and Bob Keyes started Green Meadows in 1988 on shaded ground in Kissimmee. For close to thirty years it was where Central Florida children met their first cow, whether they came with a class, with a church group or with a parent who wanted them outdoors on a Saturday. Then it closed, and the region went seven years without anywhere quite like it.
We are open again at Lancaster Ranch Park, thanks in large part to the City of Kissimmee, and the substance came back intact. Cattle, alpacas, donkeys, pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits are all close enough to meet and feed. The wagon ride still runs out through the pasture. The oaks still handle the heat. There is more room now than there used to be, which suits larger groups particularly well.
You will find us at Lancaster Ranch Park, 1881 Jack Calhoun Drive, Kissimmee, FL 34741, around thirty-one miles south of Eatonville and roughly forty-five minutes on the road, with FL-417 generally the easier route past the I-4 corridor. For a group traveling together it is a straightforward run with somewhere at the end that has space for everybody.
Start with the day. We are open Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, closed Monday and Tuesday. The last admission is at 1:00 PM Wednesday to Friday and 2:00 PM on weekends. Weekends give you the longer window, which usually suits a larger party. Wednesday is Grandparents Day, when one grandparent joins free with each paid general admission, and for a multi-generation outing that is worth building around.
Bring the food with you. We have no cafe, only vending machines, so a packed lunch is essential rather than optional, and there are shaded picnic areas set aside where a group can sit down together properly. Plenty of water for everybody. Closed shoes, hats and sunscreen all round, since the day is spent outdoors on farm ground.
For groups, reserve ahead and pay in advance. From 20 guests upward the rate is $12 each with a reservation and includes one free admission for every 20 paid; between 10 and 19 it is $15 each. Settling up beforehand gets a large party through the entrance far faster on the day, which matters when there are thirty people waiting. Individual admission is $18 from age 2, under-2s free, bought online or at the gate. We are card-only and take no cash. The feed is an optional extra, picked up at the gate or added to your tickets online.
Plan Your Visit
The Pumpkin Zone opens with the fall and becomes the busiest thing we do. Worth passing to guests: this is not a pumpkin patch, and nothing here is grown on site. Every paying guest chooses a pumpkin from the Zone and takes it home included with the ticket, which makes the arithmetic easy when you are bringing a group. It is open every day we are open right through the season, so a community outing does not have to land on one specific weekend. The Candy Hunt takes place on 2 weekends close to Halloween.
Birthday parties are simple to organize. Agree a date and time, pay in full, and your tent is reserved for your celebration. It costs $450 and includes up to 25 guests, with anyone beyond that at $15 each, and four tents run each day on Saturdays and Sundays with tables provided. Everybody invited gets the whole farm, so the animals, the wagon ride and the playground do the entertaining without you planning a single game. The decorations and the catering are yours to arrange. Worth telling your guests: pony rides and lettuce for the animals are optional extras, bought at the gate or added to your tickets online, and the celebration is outdoors from beginning to end.
School field trips and larger group visits are something we do a great deal of, and the rates above are built for them. Not here. Green Meadows is a petting farm rather than a pumpkin patch, and we do not grow pumpkins on the property. Each fall we open the Pumpkin Zone, and a pumpkin from it comes home with every paying guest, free with admission.
